Phoenix TV star awarded UK Potters Bar Rail crash payout

The UK¡¦s High Court demanded a substantial sum of money be handed over to Hong Kong (HK) this week. Its HK counterpart was expected to oversee its transfer to a trust fund to cover the costs of the TV presenter¡¦s mecal care and daily expenses.

A top Taiwanese TV presenter has been awarded substantial compensation after being horrifically injured in the Potters Ba Rail crash.

Seven people were killed and another 76 were injured when a train left the tracks near Potters Bar station after passing over a faulty set of points in May 2002.

Tanya Liu (Liu Hairuo) was left with intellectual and cognitive problems after suffering brain damage in the 2002 disaster.

The 39-year-old, who is now cared for by her family in HK, was awarded an undisclosed sum by the High Court.

Justice Irwin agreed to an award against Jarvis Rail Ltd and Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd, which he said was ¡§a substantial sum and reflects the severity of this injury.¡¨James Badenoch QC told the court Liu, who drew audiences of 140 million, was left ¡§a shadow of her former self. It is very difficult for her to come to terms with that.¡¨During her career, Liu had interviewed Bill Clinton and Bill Gates. Her popularity had led to the Chinese premier intervening to fly her to Beijing for specialist care following the crash.

She spent two months in a coma having suffered brain damage, spinal fractures and internal injuries.

Liu¡¦s sister, brother-in-law and elderly parents are now providing her round-the-clock care.
Heroine to stick it out

(chinanews.com) ¡V ¡§The compensation case has finally come to an end, but the road to recovery will be long. I will stick it o with support from my family, my company, my friends and colleagues,¡¨ Liu Hairuo said. Liu¡¦s family was satisfied with the outcome of the case. Liu Changle, Chairman of the committee board of HK-based satellite TV station Phoenix TV, where Liu served as an anchor, was also pleased with the outcome.

He further remarked that the team at Phoenix TV will continue to support and help Hairuo.

Lawyer: no money could compensate for her loss

(thelawyer.com) Field Fisher Waterhouse (FFW) has landed a High Court ruling that sees a top Taiwanese TV presenter being awarded substantial compensation after being horrifically injured in the Potters Bar Rail crash.

Personal injury partner Paul McNeil from FFW, who acted for Liu, said ¡§no amount of money will compensate Tanya for the horrendous injuries she suffered and the glittering career which was snatched from her as a result of this avoidable accident.¡¨ ¡§Tanya was the most seriously injured surviving victim of the Potters Bar rail crash. The case was extremely complex, involving legal issues in the UK, Chinese mainland and Taiwan Province.¡¨
